MUCKUPS IN THE MIDDLE EAST: THE SYKES-PICOT AGREEMENT AND THE CONFLICT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
The Middle East is a region embroiled in turmoil. The expansion of ISIS, the Syrian Civil War, and the refugee crisis are problems which have garnered international media attention. All of these problems can trace their roots to the notorious Sykes-Picot agreement. The Sykes-Picot was a secret wartime agreement between Britain and France which divided up the Ottoman Empire and created new borders. However, little attention was paid to the demographics of the area, meaning the new borders were immensely unpopular. This deeply entrenched dissatisfaction with the Sykes-Picot is what has driven the violence, turmoil, and socio-political issues we see today.
